How Do I get home owners to hire me to paint their homes? As a home owner, would door to door sales, work?

I run a small home painting business in the East Bay of San Francisco. I use C.L. , its free and seems to work, I dont trust the yelllow pages, am I wrong? How do and would you hire a house painter.
